Someone else has a patent
You modify some GPL software
Your changes practice the claims of that patent
The patent holder sues you (and wins)
You are required to take a license from the patent holder
Or you choose to take a license without a lawsuit
The license doesn't permit some things allowed by the GPL
You can't distribute the software at all
